Navajo Nation presidential candidate Lynda Lovejoy is campaigning across the tri-state reservation as the tribal election nears.

Lovejoy is the first woman in the running for president of the largest tribe in the U.S. Her running mate is Walter Phelps, a former aide to Rep. Rick Renzi (R-Arizona).

Lovejoy and Phelps want to bring more power to local communities. They say the central government in Window Rock, Arizona, is too far for many people on the reservation.

Incumbent President Joe Shirley Jr. is seeking re-election. His running mate is Bennie Shelly, a Navajo Nation Council delegate.

The election is November 7.
