California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) is reaching out to tribes across California as he prepares for his upcoming re-election bid.
Schwarzenegger made personal calls to the leaders of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The governor angered the tribes by calling them special interests, accused them of ripping off the state and trying to muscle them into signing new compacts.
Schwarzenegger also plans to meet with the California Nations Indian Gaming Association, the state's largest inter-tribal organization, and the Tribal Alliance of Sovereign Indian Nations. CNIGA members have publicly opposed many of Schwarzenegger's policies.
Schwarzenegger has already met with the California Tribal Business Alliance, a small group of tribes that have been friendly to his administration. The group's members signed new compacts.
