Schwarzenegger: Tribe interfering with election
Friday, September 19, 2003

Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the leading Republican in California's recall election, is accusing the Morongo Band of Mission of Indians of interfering with the race.

The tribe is running television ads on behalf of Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock. But since the tribe has also donated money to Lt. Gov. Gov. Cruz Bustamante (D) and Gov. Gray Davis (D), Schwarzenegger said the move was a ploy to divide the GOP.

"They want to interfere with the process so Bustamante wins," Schwarzenegger was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

Meanwhile, Bustamante and McClintock are threatening to boycott next week's recall election debate because it is scripted. The forum happens to be the only debate actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the leading Republican, will agree to.

"I wouldn't do a pose-down with him and he obviously doesn't want to debate me," McClintock was quoted as saying on a radio show.

McClintock also responded to Schwarzenegger's criticism of the tribe's ads. ""I believe this generation has the obligation to honor a commitment made for California Indians a century ago," he was quoted as saying. "Arnold Schwarzenegger has broken many promises in the short span of this campaign. But this is one promise this generation must keep."
