Calif. tribes welcome pick for compact negotiator
Thursday, January 8, 2004

Tribal leaders in California say they are satisfied with the person Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) picked to lead negotiations for gaming compacts.

Attorney Daniel Kolkey has experience in the issue. As an aide to former Gov. Pete Wilson, he helped negotiate controversial compacts in 1998. Several tribes rejected the agreements as too restrictive.

Nevertheless, Deron Marquez, chairman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, said Kolkey's involvement was a "sound choice." Maurice Lyons, chairman of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, said he's willing to sit down and discuss gaming. The California Nations Indian Gaming Association (CNIGA), which represents 59 tribe, congratulated Schwarzenegger for naming Kolkey.

But Mark Macarro, chairman of the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians, criticized the decision. "Its extremely disappointing that the governor chose Kolkey, because Mr. Kolkey had a shot once under Wilson and blew it," he was quoted as saying.

According to The San Francisco Chroncle, Schwarzenegger will seek less than $1 billion from the tribes. The amount will be contained in the budget to released on Friday.
