"Over the past five years, California�s Indian tribes have become political players, spending nearly $135 million on initiatives and candidates. But they may have made a major misstep in the recall campaign. The tribes -- by some accounts annoyed that their political foe, former GOP Gov. Pete Wilson, got involved in the Arnold Schwarzenegger campaign -- spent lavishly in an attempt to hold off the Terminator.

The tribes gave more than $8 million to Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante and $3 million to conservative GOP state Sen. Tom McClintock. They lost, and the tribes are on the hot seat. "
