The Spirit Lake Nation has called off a meeting with University of North Dakota President Charles Kupchella, school officials said.
The tribe was set to meet with Kupchella to discuss the school's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo. The issue was on the agenda of today's general council meeting.
Kupchella is trying to persuade the tribe not to oppose the name. He claims that "people with I don't know what kind of agenda" are spreading "misinformation" about the school's use of an Indian head logo and tribal name.
The Spirit Lake Nation previously passed a resolution that didn't outright oppose the name. Tribal members have since voted to rescind their support.
