The Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut will continue to fight for federal recognition, tribal leaders and members say.

On October 12, the Bureau of Indian Affairs issued a reconsidered final determination against the tribe. Associate deputy secretary Jim Cason said the tribe failed to meet all the mandatory criteria for recognition.

The tribe is still mulling its official position but a lawsuit against the BIA is likely. The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, another Connecticut tribe denied by the BIA, is also planning a lawsuit.

In the meantime, Eastern Pequot leaders say they will persevere. The BIA decision won't stop them from being Indian, they say.
