Controversial University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill is Indian, his lawyer says in 50-page response delivered to a school committee on Monday.
Lawyer David Lane said Churchill meets three standards for being Indian: self-identification, community acceptance and tribal enrollment. A copy of Churchill's associate membership card in the United Keetowah Band and a videotape of his induction ceremony was included in the filing.
Churchill was enrolled in a program in which almost anyone could get associate membership, current UKB leaders say. They say Churchill was not required to prove he had Cherokee ancestry.
According to news reports, Churchill at varous times has claimed Cherokee, UKB, Creek, Cree and Metis ancestry.
