The Grand Forks Herald publishes more reaction about the controversy over the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo. The positive comments outweigh the negative ones this time.
Butt out, NCAA: "The NCAA sticking their noses into the mascot debate is ridiculous. The "Fighting Sioux" debate should stay between UND and the tribe. If the NCAA is allowed to step in and mandate these changes then Notre Dame better look out. The leprechaun is pretty offensive to short, feisty, Irish men."
Respect the tribes: "I am a non-native and it is long overdue for the community and UND to accept and respect Native Americans by creating a new logo. The continued fight is escalating negativity and misguided anger toward Indian programs and people. That is why this issue is a big deal!"
Get over yourself: "This whole thing about the name Fighting Sioux is unbelievable! What about the state name North Dakota, or where is the NCAA based, Indiana? Come on people, who ever is opposing the name, lets hear why this is bad?"
Embarrassed: "I am not Native American. I am an UND alumni. I am totally embarrassed by what those opposed to the NCAA ruling wrote into a recent Backtalk. Are these people really as ignorant and intolerant as they sound?"

More letters on 'Fighting Sioux'
Michael Timothy Davies: "Recently, I saw the Oct. 9 letter by Cliff Staples, Marcia Mikulak and six other members of the UND faculty and staff.
The letter claims, among other things, that the continued use of the Fighting Sioux nickname "perpetuates and fosters white racism."
Thank goodness my family and friends are not likely to read the Herald and see that statement. For if they do, they will discover that I am The White Racist."
Merril Berg: "It's hard to understand UND President Charles Kupchella's continued struggle on the Fighting Sioux nickname. It's obvious that many Dakotah people view the nickname as offensive.
I've been fortunate to have a 40-year relationship with the Spirit Lake Nation, including a role as the founding president of Candeska Cikana Community College. I have learned there often is a reluctance amongst Indians to get involved in controversy with the white community."
