MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2001

A group of non-Natives launched a late night raid on Mi'kmaq fisherman late Sunday night, with shots reported fired on Miramichi Bay in New Brunswick.

No one was report hurt in the melee, in which lobster traps set down by fisherman from the Burnt Church First Nation were apparently damaged.

Police knew the attack was about to happen but could not stop the non-Natives. A videotape of the attack is being reviewed.

The non-Native attack is the first in more than year after the Supreme Court affirmed the treaty rights of Mi'kmaq and Maliseet fisherman to trap lobster.
