Norton's phone calls questioned

JANUARY 23, 2001 The New York Times today reports that Secretary of Interior nominee Gale Norton made taped telephone calls to voters in Colorado last November warning them of a "smear campaign" against Republicans by Democrats and outside interests. Since Norton only identified herself as former Attorney General and not as a member of the Republican Party, some Democrats are saying the calls were inappropriate. Callers were told to call a number, which directed them to the state Republican Party, if they received "smear mail." Get the Story:
