S.D. schools asked for mascot data

FRIDAY, JANUARY 11, 2002 The Office of Civil Rights within the Department of Education has asked school districts in South Dakota to provide data about their use of Indian-themed mascots, symbols, performances and other representations. The request comes as the office is investigating a civil rights complaint filed against various school districts. A Native American activist sought the probe after the schools failed to move on her push to have the mascots, themes and other symbol removed. Get the Story:
