The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has launched an investigation into the safety of casks that will be used to store nuclear waste on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah.

The NRC's inspector general agreed to look into the matter in response to claims by a former auditor. The auditor says the NRC has ignored problems with the casks.

Utah Governor Mike Leavitt (R) has written to support the probe. He and other state officials and politicians oppose the tribe's plans to store waste on its land.
