Indian schools in Mont. promoting healthy foods

MONDAY, MARCH 31, 2003 Schools on Montana's reservations are promoting healthy eating among students in order to combat diabetes, obesity and other health problems. On the Fort Peck Reservation, the school was forced to change its menu by students. Schools on the Crow and Northern Cheyenne reservations are eating smaller portions and doing without fatty foods. Diabetes among Plains Indian youth is lower than the national average but 39 percent of Native children nationwide are overweight, according to a nutritionist. Type 2 diabetes is also showing up in Native youth at earlier and earlier ages. Get the Story:
