TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2003 The Chippewa Cree Tribe of Montana is fighting diabetes among youth by changing the eating habits of school children on the reservation. Using a $750,000 federal diabetes grant, the tribe hired a dietitian to revamp the menu at the Rocky's Boys school. Some foods with high fat content were eliminated and ingredients for other recipes have been modified. More fruits and vegetables were added. The changes have been resisted by some parents and students. But K-6 Principal Sharon Patacsil said they are necessary to combat "fluffy" kids who are danger of becoming overweight or obese.
