Less than half of the Yellowstone National Park bison that have been slaughtered in recent weeks tested positive for a deadly disease, The Billings Gazette reports.

Of the 231 killed, only 44 percent were carrying brucellosis. The disease can be fatal to cows.

The state of Montana is allowed to slaughter the bison for fear of transmitting the disease.
