Explosion kills 14 in Colombia

THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 2002 A leftist group was blamed for an explosive attack on Colombia's capital as the country's new president, who has promised to crack down on violent rebels, was being sworn in. At least 14 were killed and 40 hurt in the mortar explosion. President Álvaro Uribe Vélez was in the Congressional building in Bogota, which is adjacent to area that was hit. Police said the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was to no one claimed responsibility. The guerilla group has target Indian land, Indian villages and enlisted young Indians to join its effort. Get the Story:
