EPA's Whitman cleared of wrongdgoing

WEDNESDAY, JULY 17, 2002 Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christie Whitman was cleared of wrongdoing as part of investigation started by a former official and tribal member who quit his post. Robert Martin, a member of the Makah Nation of Washington, was looking into conflict of interest questions affecting the cleanup of three sites. He said Whitman's business ties may have affected the process but the department's inspector general has just concluded there was no wrongdoing. Martin left his job as EPA ombudsman because he was being reassigned. The General Accounting Office yesterday testified to the House that the EPA's reorganization was ill-planned. Get the Story:
