Russell Means in race for tribal president

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2002 American Indian Movement activist and actor Russell Means will face Oglala Lakota President John Yellowbird Steele in the South Dakota tribe's upcoming November 5 election. Means took the most votes in Tuesday's primary, according to unofficial results. He was almost barred from participating due to his 1970s felony conviction and his lack of reservation residency. Means tried to run for governor of New Mexico but was not allowed on the ballot. Get the Story:
