Editorial: Norton 'toss in the towel'

"Talk about a never-ending story! A judge has held the U.S. secretary of the Interior in contempt for failing to unravel the tangled mess of Indian trust funds.

Again.

On Tuesday, Interior Secretary Gale Norton was nailed. In an odd twist, the ruling came down while she was in Phoenix to speak at a national gathering of tribes to discuss economic development.

Three years ago, it was Bill Clinton's Interior secretary, Bruce Babbitt, getting hit with contempt.

There's a moral here: The Interior Department cannot fix this problem.

The only answer, as we've said before, is to put the job into the hands of financial professionals. . ."
