Opinion: Atlanta profits off 'offensive' team name
Tuesday, October 21, 2003

"I am more than a little ashamed of the fact that Atlanta, which has made such impressive leaps in confronting racial prejudice over the course of the past half century, continues to advertise itself with such a blatantly racist name tagged to its baseball franchise.

The name "Braves" evokes nothing but the stereotypical view that even in our modern times, all Native Americans are combative, even bloodthirsty, warriors on the warpath for some other (baseball) tribe to hunt down and kill before triumphantly returning home, scalps dangling at their belts.

Obviously, this assumption, and the name that goes with it, is outdated and ridiculous. No one would think of calling our baseball franchise the Atlanta Slaves, reflecting the dismissal of an entire ethnic group in the way it was perceived 200 years ago."
