Penobscot Nation part of major salmon agreement
Tuesday, October 7, 2003

The Penobscot Nation of Maine is part of a new agreement designed to boost runs of threatened Atlantic salmon and other fish on the Penobscot River.

The tribe, environmental groups and PPL Corp., a power company, will purchase three dams for about $25 million. Two of the dams will be removed and the third will be altered to allow better fish passage. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will provide construction assistance.

The tribe depends on fish for subsistence.
