Md. governor rejects recogniton of Piscataway Tribe
Friday, September 26, 2003

Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R) on Wednesday denied recognition to the Piscataway Conoy Confederacy and Subtribes, saying the group failed to show a direct connection to an historical tribe.

Ehrlich said the tribe could resubmit information and seek another ruling. The tribe has been denied federal recognition by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The group is separate from the rival Piscataway Indian Nation, whose state status is pending.
