Lumbee tribal council to consider felon rights
Friday, August 29, 2003

The Lumbee tribal council will meet next month to consider whether convicted felons will be allowed to serve on boards and commissions.

Some officials say allowing felons will hurt the tribe's chances of federal recognition and of receiving federal grants.

The tribal council voted by secret ballot to ban felons from serving but the Lumbee Supreme Court said the secret vote was unconstitutional.
