Miami Nation purchases ancestral land in Ill.
Thursday, August 28, 2003

The Miami Nation of Oklahoma has purchased 26 acres of land in Illinois, The Mattoon Journal reports.

The tribe filed a 2.6-million-acre land claim in Illinois but dropped it after running into opposition. Tribal officials disputed news accounts that said they would settle for a casino.

The tribe has sought to reclaim a Miami allotment in Kansas. But the Department of Interior says the tribe doesn't have jurisdiction there, a step necessary to open a casino. The decision is being appealed.

The tribe has since turned to Indiana to pursue a casino, possibly in Gary.
