Judge asked to toss Indian voting rights suit
Monday, July 28, 2003

The state of South Dakota is asking a federal judge to dismiss a voting rights lawsuit filed on behalf of Native Americans.

The suit alleges the state diluted Indian rights when it redrew legislative districts affecting voters on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations. One district currently has one-third Native population but usuauly elects non-Indian legislators, the Associated Press reported.

The suit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
