Alaska Native women study for teacher certification
Thursday, July 31, 2003

A group of 19 Native women from rural Alaska are taking part in a two-week program to help them gain state teacher certification.

The Praxis Institute, named for the state's Praxis test, offers tutoring and guidance. But the program is still trying to improve its success rate -- less than half of the women who have participated have passed the reading, writing and math exams.

The institute encourages Natives to become teachers because of the high turnover rate in rural schools. Natives are also more likely to be accepted by the community.
