Narragansett Tribe seeks police agreement with town
Wednesday, March 3, 2004

The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island says a recent incident shows the need for a policing agreement with the town of Charlestown.

The Charlestown police chief agrees. The town asked the state for a legal opinion on police matters but has yet to receive a response.

The tribe has its own police force but turns over tribal members to the state for prosecution. That's what tribal leaders say should have happened when a state police officer pursued a council member onto the reservation. The incident ended with a confrontation but the council member later turned himself in.
