For many years, we have been pleading with the priests and management at Red Cloud Indian School to do something about the old cemetery.

So many of the wooden crosses that once proudly held the names of those Lakota men, women and children buried there have fallen into terrible disrepair. The wood has rotted over the years and the crosses have fallen to the ground only to be blown away in the wind. Why are they not replacing the crosses to honor those who are buried there?

Many former students of what was then Holy Rosary Mission remember some of their friends and school mates who are buried there, but the crosses on their graves have long since vanished and only empty plots remain where they are buried.

Roch Red Elk (now deceased) and Tim Giago recall digging the grave of their friend “Bozo” Richards, but the marker on his grave has long since rotted away so his grave couldn’t be found even if one was looking for it. And that is the case of so many Lakota buried there.
