Saginaw Chippewa Tribe backs IHCIA reauthorization

The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan says the Indian Health Care Improvement Act will improve health care services for Native Americans.

Joe Sowmick, the chairman of the tribe's health board, said S.1200 helps tribes provided services to all Native Americans, regardless where they live. He said the bill encourages more Native people to enter the health care profession.

The tribe operates the Nimkee Memorial Wellness Center with 30 percent of funds from the Indian Health Service. The rest comes from the tribe.

The Senate passed S.1200 on February 26 by an 83-10 vote. The House is still working on its version of the bill.
