Rhode Island governor fights subpoena over raid
Friday, August 3, 2007

Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) is fighting a subpoena to testify about his role in the state's July 14, 2003, raid of the Narragansett Reservation.

Seven tribal members -- including Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas -- were arrested during the raid. State troopers stormed the reservation in order to shut down a tax-free smokeshop.

In the wake of the incident, Carcieri told the public he directed the troopers to withdraw if they encountered resistance, which they did. But former Col. Steven M. Pare testified that he never received such instructions.

The judge will rule later today whether Carcieri must testify, The Providence Journal reported.
