Narragansett chief meets with Rhode Island governor

The leaders of the Narragansett Tribe and the state of Rhode Island met on Tuesday to discuss legal, political and other issues.

The tribe and the state have been at odds over land-into-trust, sovereignty and gaming. But Narragansett Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas called the meeting with Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) a "step in the right direction."

Thomas and Carcieri discussed an upcoming January 9 hearing on the tribe's land-into-trust application. The 1st Circuit Court of Appeals will decide whether the state's laws apply to the property.
