Two men on trial for murder of 13-year-old Native girl

Two men are on trial for the murder of a 13-year-old Native girl in Edmonton, Alberta.

Michael Briscoe, 36, and Joseph Laboucan, 21, are accused of kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault in connection with the death of Nina Courtepatte. She was found dead at a golf course in April 2005.

The killing shocked the community. On the opening day of the trial, Courtepatte's relatives gasped and sobbed as they watched a videotape of the crime scene.

Three other people -- including a young male who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder -- were charged in connection with Courtepatte's death. All three were all minors at the time of the crime.
