Congress extends deadline to file tribal trust claims

The deadline for tribes to file trust mismanagement claims has been extended for one year under a bill passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bush.

Tribes will have until December 31, 2006, to pursue lawsuits based on the Arthur Andersen reconciliation reports prepared on their accounts. The reports indicated that certain transactions could not be accounted for.

The reports were given to tribes in the mid-1990s, a move that started the standard six-year statute of limitations. By changing the day on which the reports were received, the deadline is extended.
