Wind River Tribes settle some trust claims for $12M
Friday, June 11, 2004

The tribes on the Wind River Reservation have reached a partial settlement to their trust mismanagement lawsuit against the federal government.

The Northern Arapaho Tribe and the Eastern Shoshone Tribe will share in $12 million to cover underpaid oil and royalties from 1973 to 2000. Tribal members will receive 85 percent of the money with the rest going to the tribal governments.

The $12 million payment is part of a four-part case against the government. The tribes were paid $2 million for sand and gravel claims in the first part. The other parts of the case for claims prior to 1973 are still in litigation, with the tribe securing several victories in the courts.
