Ohio Congressman sought 'cover' for golf trip
Monday, September 26, 2005

Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio) asked disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff to "cover" a golf outing to Scotland, according to e-mails reviewed by Newsweek magazine.

Abramoff then asked the Tigua Tribe of Texas to foot the bill for the trip. The tribe turned down the request, the tribe said in testimony to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.

Ney, who had promised to insert a rider to help the tribe reopen its casino, went to Scotland anyway. He said the trip was sponsored by a Washington think-tank and that its purpose was to give a "speech to Scottish Parliamentarians" and to visit the British Parliament.

But the Scottish Parliament has no records of Ney, or any other member of Congress, visiting and "there is no way" Ney could have given a speech because the parliament was in recess at the time, Newsweek reports. The British Parliament was also on break

Ney's spokesperson said the Congressman didn't give a "formal speech" but that he did meet "with a number of folks over there. I don't have any names."
