Daschle unseated by Republican rival Thune
Wednesday, November 3, 2004

Sen. Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota) was unseated by Republican John Thune on Tuesday in one of the most heated races in the nation.

With all but one precinct reporting, Daschle received 193,279, or 49 percent, of the votes. Thune was put over the top with 197,813, or 51 percent, of the votes.

The margin of difference does not appear to be enough to trigger an automatic state recount. Some votes from Shannon County, encompassing the heavily Democratic Pine Ridge Reservation, still have to be tallied.

The race cost more than $40 million.
