Federal Recognition
Appeal of Nipmuc Nation recognition accepted

The Department of the Interior's Board of Indian Appeals has accepted the Nipmuc Nation's recognition case.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs denied the tribe recognition in a final decision. The BIA said the tribe didn't meet four out of seven mandatory criteria.

The tribe filed an appeal, saying the BIA ignored evidence, including continuous state recognition. The IBIA asked for documents by the end of January 2005.
