Answer due on Nipmuc Nation recognition
Tuesday, September 16, 2003

Barring further extensions, the Bureau of Indian Affairs is supposed to issue a final decision on the Nipmuc Nation's federal recognition next week.

The tribe was granted preliminary recognition on the last full day of the Clinton administration in January 2001 while a rival faction was denied status. But the incoming Bush administration put the decision on hold pending further review.

Former assistant secretary Neal McCaleb ended up reversing the decision on the Nipmuc Nation. The tribe has submitted additional evidence in hopes of bolstering its case.
