The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians signed a new Class III gaming compact with California Gov. Jerry Brown (D). The deal eliminates a fixed revenue sharing payment the tribe agreed to make under a 2004 compact. The tribe was paying $17.4 million to the general fund every year. But due to "changing economic conditions," the new compact adopts a revenue sharing system based on percentages, the governor's office said in a press release. The tribe was having trouble funding its own operations under the 2004 deal, The Sacramento Bee reported. "The percentage-based payment structure ensures that the tribe remains the primary beneficiary of its gaming operation as required by federal law," the governor's office said.
