The Seneca Nation plans to acquire land in Henrietta, New York, for a new off-reservation casino, according to news reports.
The tribe hasn't announced details. But Henrietta Supervisor Jack Moore told The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle that the tribe will spend upwards of $200 million on the project.
The tribe currently operates two off-reservation casinos. Those sites were acquired in connection with the Seneca
Nation Settlement Act of 1990.
The law requires the federal government to hold the land in "restricted fee" status. The unique provision means the tribe isn't required to follow Bureau of Indian Affairs regulations that affect gaming on lands acquired after 1988, a federal judge said in a recent case involving an existing off-reservation casino in Buffalo.
