The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is taking another look at a petition that calls for a referendum on the controversial "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.

The tribal council didn't take action on the petition earlier this month. But Chairman Charles Murphy has apparently said it should be considered in a fair manner.

“It’s not over. We’re 1,004 strong and we signed our names," petition organizer Archie Fool Bear. told The Bismarck Tribune. "Our people need to be heard. This is a democracy, not a dictatorship.”

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education voted to retire the nickname without hearing from the tribe. It's not clear if the situation will change after a tribal referendum.

The board had until November 30 to hear from the tribe. The Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation already voted to support the nickname.
