"What’s the rush?
That’s the key question that arises when the State Board of Higher Education sets deadlines and tries to bring the Fighting Sioux nickname issue to an early close.
What really is the rush?
Especially when there’s a fair chance that granting a few more weeks could give Standing Rock Sioux voters a chance to weigh in.
The Spirit Lake Sioux referendum earlier this year was a decisive moment in the nickname’s history. It was a clarifying vote that will be talked about for years to come, regardless of the nickname’s fate.
Today, it’s still quite possible that the Standing Rock Sioux could take a vote of their own, even considering tribal chairman Charlie Murphy’s statement that the issue is not one of the tribe’s top priorities.
In fact, a group of Spirit Lake Sioux now are pressing the matter in court to force the state board to allow that extra time.
Why not go ahead and do just that?
What’s the rush?"
