Leaders of the Standing Rock
Sioux Tribe won't be taking action on the controversial "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota for now.
Nickname supporters wanted the tribal council to schedule a referendum on the issue. But the council voted 8-6 to wait until it hears from the North Dakota Board of
Higher Education about the issue.
Under a settlement with the NCAA,
UND agreed to eliminated "Fighting Sioux" unless it could get the support of the
Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Spirit Lake Dakotah
Nation. Members of the Spirit Lake Nation already voted to support the name.
The deadline for UND to gain tribal support is November.
