Members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe are gathering signatures for a petition on the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.

Supporters of the nickname and logo hope the petition will convince the tribe to hold a referendum on the matter. The tribal council currently opposes the use of the "Sioux" name.

Members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation voted to support the name and logo.
