The Standing Rock Sioux
Tribe will probably get more time to consider its position on the "Fighting Sioux"
nickname and logo of the University of
North Dakota.
The North Dakota Board of
Higher Education set an October 31 deadline to hear from the tribe and a November 30 deadline for a referendum on the issue.
But the tribal council won't be meeting until November 9 at the earliest, Chairman Charles Murphy said, and the tribe requires 30 days notice of a referendum.
William Goetz, the chancellor of the North Dakota University System, spoke with Murphy and said he's willing to give the tribe 30 more days to take action.
Members of the Spirit
Lake Dakotah Nation already voted to support the "Fighting Sioux." The
tribal council passed a resolution to support the nickname and logo in
"perpetuity."
