Opponents of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota hope to persuade the Spirit Lake Dakotah
Nation to reverse the tribe's stance on the issue.
The tribal council passed a resolution that supports the "perpetual" use of the name and logo. Opponents don't think the council has the authority to grant perpetual permission.
The North Dakota Board of
Higher Education set an October 1 for UND to obtain tribal support for the "Sioux" nick. The Standing Rock Sioux
Tribe won't be supporting it, Chairman Ron His Horse Is Thunder has said.
