Supporters of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota are hoping the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe will schedule a vote on the issue now that members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah
Nation have spoken.
Tom Iron, a Standing Rock Sioux member who also sits on a state committee that is examining the issue, said supporters are preparing a petition for a referendum. Spirit Lake voters backed the nickname and logo with 67 percent of the vote.
“It’s gonna make it stronger because people want to come up with an answer to what’s going on here,” Iron said of the Spirit Lake vote, The Grand Forks Herald reported.
The Standing Rock tribal council has voted against the idea of a referendum but supporters say they can try to get the issue on an upcoming ballot.
