Leaders and members of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina celebrated on Thursday after the House passed a federal recognition bill.
"We were crying and a-hugging and thanking the Lord," chairman Jimmy Goins told The Charlotte News & Observer.
The House voted 256 to 128 [Roll
Call] to approve H.R.65. The vote came after a rule to prevent amendments to the bill was passed by a 214 to 193 vote [Roll
Call] and after an attempt to send the bill back to the House Natural Resources Committee was rejected by a 152 to 237 vote [Roll
Call].
The bill still has to be taken up in the Senate. Sen. Richard Burr (R-North Carolina), a member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, is pushing for action.
