The Senate Indian Affairs Committee has delayed consideration of a bill to recognize the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.
Due a scheduling issue, the business meeting set for this Wednesday was pushed back to August 2.
The tribe is in legal limbo due to a special act of Congress passed during the termination era. The law identified the Lumbees as Indians but prohibited their treatment as a federally recognized entity.
S.660 would recognize the tribe. A rival bill, supported by the Eastern Band of Cherokees, the only federally recognized tribe in North Carolina, would change the termination law but require the Lumbees to through the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
